The story "On The Rainy River" by Tom O'Brien, makes it clearer that this a personal story for the author. He works at a slaughterhouse. We discover that he gets recruited to come to Vietnam to fight in a war, but ends up going to make his journey to Canada. Throughout the story, we realize that it shows a lot of symbols and ideas related back to archetypal theory. Tim is the protagonist, and he deals with an issue. He does not really show all the characteristics of a "hero" until later (when he actually fights in the war). This is his personal story: "This is one story I've never told before" (O' Brien) One of the archetypes that most stood out to me first was the mentor. The mentor is the person who guides the protagonist during his journey and keeps them on the right path. I feel that the old man, Elroy, keeps being referring to, and would rightfully fill in the mentor characteristics. We see this when he says " "Blurt it out—the man saved me. He offered exactly what I needed, without questions, without any words at all. He took me in."(O'Brien) He just took him under his wing intending to teach and take care of him during a dark time for him. Elroy also provides Tim with advice and a room, and whatever else he needs. The archetype where the character is at a high point of being then descends into a lower point is called "The Fall". We also see this archetype in the story, when he is recruited for the war. He begins felling anxious and scared to go forward. He says "I remember opening up the letter, scanning the first few lines feeling the blood go thick behind my eyes. I remember a sound in my head. It wasn't thinking. It was just thinking, just like a silent howl. A million things all at once - I was too good for this war. To compassionate, too everything. It couldn't happen." (O'Brien). Loss of innocence. Towards the end of the story, there is a symbol of rebirth. This is when Tim and Elroy go down to the river. The river itself is a symbol of rebirth. It makes him realize that it was an obligation to fight in the war. He also realizes that escaping to Canada was just a “pitiful fantasy”: "It struck me then that he must've planned it. I'll never be certain, of course, but I think he meant to bring me up against the realities, to guide me across the river, and to take me to the edge and to stand a kind of vigil as I chose a life for myself.” (O'Brien) In conclusion, there were many different types of archetypes throughout the story. Analyzing using the archetypal theory really helped me understand the book better.

Writing an essay has three main stages. The preparation, the actual writing, and then the revision. Then, there are many components to finish each stage. Going through these stages is not the easiest thing to do for everyone. Some people struggle on other stages rather than others. I feel that the preparation and the revision stages are much easier when shared and discussed with other people. The whole process of writing a good essay is lengthy, but it is worth it if you want to value your product.
In my opinion, the most difficult part of writing the essay is the preparation. The actual writing of the essay is much easier once you have this part out of the way. This is because once you have all your ideas written down in front of you, and all the critical components you want to add to your essay, it becomes much easier to piece it all together and get all your word onto paper. The preparation stages consist of choosing a topic, conducting all the necessary research, understanding your audience, creating an outline and most importantly creating a thesis statement. During this stage, you will encounter a lot of different perspectives and ideas, and I feel this is most difficult because your own perspective may change as well. The next stage is the actual writing of the essay! This is where you will write out all your paragraphs, including the introduction and conclusion. Then finally the icing on the cake, the revision stage. During the revision stage you proofread, review, evaluate, and check for any errors you may have made. There are many reasons why some essays have been more successful than others. Some people skip the necessary stages or do not complete all the components of the stage. Some people don't listen to feedback. I feel that if you want to have a successful essay, you have to open to feedback, and make sure follow through the steps! It will only make your essay better! Take a look at Otis Redding's "Respect" www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvC9V_lBnDQ Now listen to Aretha Franklin's "Respect" (you've probably heard this one before) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWUHaUJfhSo Aretha Franklin's version is the newer one. Not only did she cover Redding's song, she like flipped it and made it much better in my opinion. She changed the lyrics to suit her, spelled it out in the chorus, and added the “sock it to me” refrain. She turned his call for some sort of entitlement song into a demand for empowerment and creating a feminist and civil rights big jam. To a great extent, I would say Aretha Franklin created something original enough that it doesn't infringe on the original work's copyright. I would say the song is original enough that she could claim as it her own for real! Like not even a cover! The difference between these "covers" and "rip-offs" is that covers are where one would perform the artist's original song but still having acknowledgement of their creation, whereas rip off (copy) is taking that artist's original song but no acknowledgement or no credit is given. Some guidelines creators should follow to avoid “ripping something off” are getting permission/consent from the creator/artist and giving the creator/artist credit. Everyone should try their best to be creative/original though. Keeps the world fascinating. I actually did in fact enjoy the podcast episode. Yeah I did. You know, the episode was very intriguing in a way where I was interested and wanted to keep listening. The tone the narrator was using throughout the episode was very calm and relaxed which also helped. I think that the fact that this was podcast made it more interesting because it was coming from like a real person. She also went over some very interesting topics that made me think. For example, the fact that people tend to remember things, if to them it was significant. The narrator said that it is more likely for people to remember a series events surrounding something that was significant for them as to nothing new happening. I really do enjoy this type of reading/ journalism because of the authenticity and the ability the relate.
